Ike Mango

Analyst, Corporate Planning,
Honda Aircraft Company

For Ike Mango, coming back to Greensboro wasn’t just a move—it was a moment of clarity. After graduating from college, Ike spent several years teaching English in Japan, immersing himself in a new culture and language. When his teaching stint ended, he and his girlfriend began considering where to plant roots in North Carolina. Raleigh and Wilmington were on the list—but Greensboro kept pulling on his heartstrings.

Dr. Thomas Thekkekandam, MD

Family Medicine and Sports Medicine,
Cone Health

Dr. Thomas Thekkekandam left London’s world-renowned sports medicine fellowship training with a clear next move: back to Greensboro.

A specialist in musculoskeletal care for athletes and non-athletes alike, Thomas returned to North Carolina to work at Cone Health — drawn by both professional opportunity and the kind of lifestyle bigger cities rarely allow.

“Cone Health supports me as a physician,” he says. “Fantastic facilities, great staff, and a patient-first culture make it easy to focus on what matters most.”

Thomas and his family have found joy in the simple things: exploring Greensboro’s restaurants, planning day trips to both the mountains and the coast, and being just minutes from family. “Possibly most importantly,” he adds, “our family is very close by.”

For Thomas, Greensboro hits the sweet spot. It’s diverse. It’s intellectually rich, thanks to several local universities. And it’s full of people building meaningful lives without all the pressure and pace of bigger metros.

Flex Registered Nurse, Women's and Children's Center,
Cone Health

Abby Polos moved back to Greensboro from Knoxville, Tennessee with more than just a zip code change in mind. As a Flex RN at the Women’s and Children’s Center at Cone Health, Abby now floats between units supporting families at some of their most important life moments — all while raising her own in a place that finally feels just right.

“We really wanted our kids to grow up in a diverse community,” she says. “Greensboro has people from all walks of life.”

Her return wasn’t just about nostalgia — it was about possibility. Thanks to Boomerang Greensboro, Abby and her family reconnected with the city on new terms, finding schools, community, and even a cello teacher along the way.

Weekends now mean downtown strolls, visits to the library or the children’s museum, and plenty of people-watching on Elm Street. “There’s always something great to do downtown,” she adds.

In her professional life, Abby has found real support. “Cone Health has taken steps to make sure we as employees are healthy, so that the community can be healthy.” And in her personal life? She’s found space, rhythm, and meaningful connection.

Afika Nxumalo

Hip-Hop Artist,
Songwriter

Afika Nxumalo’s return to Greensboro isn’t just a move – it’s a powerful full-circle moment rooted in music, identity, and a desire to uplift the creative spirit of his hometown.

Born and raised in Greensboro, Afika first made waves as a member of The Urban Sophisticates, a beloved local hip-hop septet that blended soulful lyrics with live instrumentation and community-driven energy. Their sound helped define a moment in Greensboro’s creative scene – and laid the foundation for Afika’s future as a solo artist.

After years of performing across the Southeast, Afika took a leap and launched his solo career abroad, spending more than a decade between London and Brooklyn. There, he sharpened his craft, collaborated with global artists, and carved out a distinct voice in the world of music. His talent and persistence paid off in a big way when his song “Chosen” was featured in the trailer for the Warner Bros. film Judas and the Black Messiah, a milestone moment that showcased his music on a national stage.

Now back in Greensboro, Afika is channeling all of that big-city experience into something deeply personal: investing in the city’s blossoming creative class. With a vision for mentorship, collaboration, and authentic storytelling, he sees Greensboro not as a step back – but as the ideal launchpad for bold, inclusive artistic expression.

Afika’s Boomerang story is a testament to the idea that you can leave to grow—and return to give. His presence is already shaping the next chapter of Greensboro’s cultural landscape, one beat at a time.

Dominick Amendum

Grammy-Nominated Music Supervisor,
Associate Professor of Musical Theatre, UNCG

Dominick Amendum’s journey from Greensboro to Broadway — and ultimately back again — is a masterclass in full-circle impact.

After earning his degree in classical piano performance from UNC Greensboro in 2001, Dominick’s career took flight. He became a key creative force behind the hit musical Wicked, serving as Associate Music Supervisor and conducting performances on Broadway and across the country. His talents led him to the big screen as well, working on the film adaptation of Wicked alongside stars like Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo.

But despite the bright lights and big stages, Dominick made a deliberate decision to return to Greensboro.

For several years, he served as Associate Professor and Coordinator of the Musical Theatre Program at UNCG, bringing real-world experience into the classroom. His leadership helped bridge the gap between academic training and the fast-changing demands of the entertainment industry — preparing students not just for the stage, but for the business behind it.

Now, Dominick is stepping into a new role — one that brings his creative energy even closer to the heart of the city. He’s pursuing an opportunity to grow Greensboro’s music and entertainment scene downtown, helping shape a more dynamic cultural landscape for the community he once left — and proudly returned to.

Adam Paul

Chief Executive Officer,
7 Cinematics

Adam Paul has filmed concerts at the Great Pyramids, captured Brandi Carlile and Joni Mitchell live at the Gorge Amphitheatre, and brought the Red Hot Chili Peppers to living rooms around the world — but the CEO of 7 Cinematics calls Greensboro home.

After years on the road and living in Charleston, Adam returned to Greensboro with his wife and children in search of something rare: a life that balances global creative work with genuine day-to-day ease. “We really wanted our son to enjoy his childhood,” he says. “Greensboro made that easy.”

As the founder of a company that produces high-end live concert films and music broadcasts, Adam still travels constantly — to Los Angeles, New York, and beyond — but he’s deliberate about being home in time for school pickup or dinner. “I try to time my flights so I can roll right into the carpool line,” he laughs. “There’s nothing better than seeing your kid’s smile after a long trip.”

For Adam, Greensboro isn’t just a place to recharge — it’s a home base that supports his family and his career. The local airport’s ease, the strong public schools, and the connected community make it all work. “Greensboro is easy like Sunday morning,” he says. “You get home, and it just feels good.”

Elizabeth Wicker

Lead Designer,
Chelsea House

Elizabeth Wicker never thought she’d move back to Greensboro. After graduating from Page High School, she set her sights on fashion – earning a degree in apparel design, studying in Spain, and landing a coveted job in New York City with designer Nanette Lepore.

But after nearly six years in the city, life nudged her in a new direction. What started as a reluctant return home turned into something bigger: a career reset, a creative breakthrough, and a life that feels fully hers.

Today, Elizabeth is a lead designer for Chelsea House, creating home furnishings that bring beauty, intention, and a little bit of sparkle into everyday spaces. Her Greensboro home has become her testing ground – equal parts sanctuary and studio – where she mixes vintage finds, bold patterns, and thoughtful restraint.

She still travels, still sketches late into the night. But here, surrounded by family, old friends, and her dog Sienna Rose, she’s found her center.

“I’m a Boomerang,” she says, “and I’m all in.”

Jeff Fusaiotti

Chief Audit Executive,
First Bank

A Greensboro native and Page High alum, Jeff Fusaiotti is thrilled to be back in his hometown after a few years living in Charlotte. When he was ready to move back, Boomerang Greensboro connected Jeff with First Bank, where he now serves as Chief Audit Executive. Jeff takes pride in working for a company that fosters a culture of care and supports community initiatives, including aiding Western NC after Hurricane Helene.

Now living in his old neighborhood, Jeff and his family are enjoying more time together and with friends—and cheering on his two kids, who now attend Page High School, just like he once did. Being home also allows him to focus on his nonprofit, Hands for Hearts, which he cofounded in memory of a close friend to support children with congenital heart defects through events like its annual Casino Night.

For Jeff, Greensboro isn’t just home—it’s where family, work, and community come together in a way that feels just right.

Jessica McCuiston

Senior New Business Case Manager,
Lincoln Financial

For Jessica McCuiston, coming back to Greensboro wasn’t just a move — it was a homecoming rooted in family, opportunity, and a fresh perspective on what life could look like.

After time away, Jessica and her husband — also a Boomerang — returned to Greensboro to be closer to the people who matter most. “We were really starting to miss our family and friends,” she says. With a young daughter in tow and a new chapter unfolding, they knew Greensboro offered more than just familiarity. It offered the kind of community they wanted to raise their family in.

Professionally, Jessica found momentum at Lincoln Financial, where she works as a New Business Case Manager. “There were a lot of great opportunities in Greensboro,” she says. “Lincoln stood out for its flexibility — which made all the difference during our transition.” She also saw firsthand how local companies here show up for the community. “Lincoln has deep roots in the city. You can tell they care about Greensboro’s health and future, and that makes me proud to be part of what they’re building.”

The Boomerang Greensboro campaign helped smooth the return — connecting Jessica to a local daycare, professional networks, and even real estate leads. “That kind of hands-on support made a huge difference.”

Now, when she’s not working, you can find her downtown with her family — exploring the Children’s Museum, wandering Elm Street, and soaking up the city’s energy.

“We’re so excited to be back in Greensboro. It’s a great place to raise a family, and I can’t wait to introduce my daughter to all the great things this city has to offer.”

Claire Veazey

VP of Commercial Banking,
Truist

Claire Veazey moved back to Greensboro in 2021, but in many ways, she never really left.

Claire first came to Greensboro at age three, and for her, it’s always been home. From kindergarten through senior year at Greensboro Day School, the city shaped her sense of belonging and community — values that still guide her today. After graduating from UNC-Chapel Hill, she and her husband Pearce moved to Atlanta to start their careers, with stops in Orlando and Philadelphia along the way. It was a season of new cities, big learning curves, and plenty of growth.

But when they learned they were expecting their first child, Eloise, everything shifted. “We felt a strong pull back to Greensboro,” Claire says. “We wanted to raise our family close to our roots — and give our kids the same support and sense of community we had growing up.”

Now serving as Vice President, Commercial Banking at Truist, Claire is proud of how she and Pearce have continued to grow their careers while raising three children. “It’s a constant balancing act,” she says, “but we support each other, we show up for our family, and we’re building a life that we’re proud of — together.”

Rediscovering Greensboro as an adult has brought a fresh perspective. The restaurants, parks, and breweries that were once their weekend hangouts are now part of family outings — places where old memories mix with new ones. “There’s something special about seeing this city through the eyes of our children,” she says. “It makes you appreciate just how much Greensboro has to offer.”

And the return hasn’t just been personal — it’s made a professional impact, too. With family nearby and a strong local network, Claire has found the stability and support needed to thrive at work and at home. “We couldn’t do what we do without that foundation,” she says.

Joey Cheek

EVP of Entrepreneurship,
Greensboro Chamber of Commerce

Joey Cheek has returned to his hometown of Greensboro, this time trading speed skates for startup support. Many remember Joey as the Olympic gold medalist who brought home the gold in the 500-meter speed skating event at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy. That year, Greensboro honored his achievement with “Joey Cheek Day”—and now, we’re proud to celebrate him again as a Boomerang.

After years away building a life and career with his wife, Tamara, Joey is back in Greensboro with their son, Jack, and stepping into a new kind of leadership. He now serves as the Executive Director of Launch Greensboro, the startup and entrepreneurship arm of the Greensboro Chamber of Commerce. In this role, Joey is helping shape the city’s next generation of innovators and changemakers—bringing the same passion, discipline, and drive that once propelled him to Olympic glory.

Coming home to Greensboro has meant reconnecting with roots, raising a family in a community he loves, and fueling bold ideas in a city that’s ready to grow. For Joey, the finish line in Turin wasn’t the end of the story—it was just the beginning of a journey that led him right back to where it all began.

Jackson Hoggard

Chief Executive Officer,
Double Hung Historic Window Restoration

After years away, Jackson returned to join and help grow his family’s business, Double Hung Historic Window Restoration, which specializes in preserving historic windows across the Southeast. His focus? Scaling the business, expanding its reach, and keeping craftsmanship alive — all from right here in Greensboro.

“Boomeranging back to Greensboro to grow a business just made sense,” Jackson says. “There’s a low cost of entry, a ton of opportunity, and a real sense of momentum.”

As a city, Greensboro has long been underestimated — but not by its entrepreneurs. Jackson sees it as one of the best-kept secrets in the Southeast for people ready to build something of their own.

“This is a place where you don’t have to spend years climbing over barriers just to get started. The support systems are here. The space is here. And the community wants to see you succeed.”

Growing up in Greensboro gave him one perspective — returning as an adult gave him another. “I always knew this city was something special. Coming back and experiencing it again has only reaffirmed that.”

Now, he’s not just restoring historic windows. He’s helping shape a new chapter for his family’s business — and for Greensboro’s entrepreneurial future.

Alejandra Thompson de Jordan

Co-Founder,
ESTAS Beauty

As co-founder of ESTAS Beauty — short for Every Scar Tells A Story — Alejandra is changing the way we think about scars, self-image, and skincare. “We believe scars shouldn’t be hidden or erased,” she says. “If you have a scar, it means you’re alive and growing. That deserves to be celebrated.”

Her company creates skincare products designed to nourish and care for scars — not to erase them, but to honor the stories they represent. And Greensboro? It turned out to be the right place to bring that vision to life.

“The entrepreneurial ecosystem in Greensboro and the Triad is incredibly supportive,” Alejandra says. “There are over 60 organizations that work with founders at all stages — and you can actually find them when you need them.”

She’s currently part of the Launch Greensboro Growth program, which provides mentorship, strategy, and resources to help promising companies scale. “Having that kind of support system in your own backyard is rare — and a huge reason why ESTAS is thriving here.”

She’s not alone. Alejandra is one of many Boomerangs who’ve returned to Greensboro with fresh ideas, global experience, and the energy to build something new. What surprised her most? The deep well of connection. “I’ve had childhood friends move back at the same time I did — and we’ve leaned on each other as parents, professionals, and neighbors in ways I never expected.”

For Alejandra, entrepreneurship isn’t just about launching a company — it’s about anchoring her family in a community that shares her values. “My children are growing up attending the same temple I did. We grab coffee with my dad. My daughter gets to know her aunt. That kind of multigenerational closeness isn’t just comforting — it’s powerful.”

Ingrid McCarthy

Corporate R&D Chef,
The Fresh Market

After years building careers and raising a young family in Portland, Oregon, Ingrid Chen McCarthy and her husband Jeff made the heartfelt decision to return to Ingrid’s hometown of Greensboro. With Ingrid’s mother nearby and Greensboro offering a strong sense of community, the move provided not only familial support but a chance to pursue their culinary dreams in a place that feels like home.

For Ingrid, the return was a full-circle moment. Now a chef at The Fresh Market—a beloved grocery store from her childhood—she’s able to blend her Taiwanese heritage and professional culinary background into fresh, ingredient-driven recipes enjoyed nationwide. Her early love for food, inspired by her mother’s cooking, took her from front-of-house restaurant work to fine dining kitchens and culinary school, culminating in this uniquely Greensboro-based chapter of her journey.

Meanwhile, Jeff McCarthy launched Breadservice, a microbakery and certified home kitchen based right out of their home in Greensboro’s historic College Hill neighborhood. A seasoned pastry chef with two decades of experience, Jeff began experimenting with naturally leavened sourdough bread during nap times while caring for their daughter. As demand grew, he began offering loaves on Nextdoor, and Breadservice was born. Since 2022, Breadservice has been a regular vendor at Deep Roots Market, one of the first local spots the family visited after their move.

Their story is a beautiful reminder that coming home doesn’t mean going backward—it means planting something new, right where your roots already run deep.

Jeromy Bailey

Sales Account Executive,
Kontoor Brands

After growing up in Winston-Salem with family ties in Greensboro, Jeromy spent years away chasing opportunity, building a career, and experiencing life in different cities and states. “Greensboro was always the fun, welcoming city just down the road,” he says — a place he visited often, whether for family gatherings or competitive games on the field.

His move back in October 2024 wasn’t just about geography. It was a personal reset — and a professional step forward. “I had been putting off coming home in pursuit of my career,” he reflects. “But eventually, it was time to prioritize what was best for me and my family.” A new role as Account Executive at Kontoor Brands made the transition easier — and made the timing feel, in his words, “like answered prayer.”

Greensboro now feels both familiar and new. “The city has fresh energy and a bright future — it’s clear that thoughtful leadership and strong communities are shaping what’s next,” he says. “And having a family now makes me see it all through a different lens.”

Through Boomerang Greensboro, Jeromy found a quick connection — and confirmation that he made the right move. Whether it’s faith, family, or professional growth, Greensboro has made space for all of it.
