From the Southside of Chicago back to Greensboro. And stepping into a new chapter with intention.
Dr. Christian Friend and his family have returned home, drawn by something many
eventually realize matters most. Being closer to family. Putting down roots. Building a life that feels steady, meaningful, and their own.
Christian joined Ready for School, Ready for Life in January as Chief Implementation Officer, bringing with him a career grounded in advancing opportunity and equity. His work has spanned national philanthropy and systems change, including leadership roles with Tides and Thrive Chicago. Along the way, he’s built deep expertise in organizational strategy, leadership development, and strengthening communities.
His path also runs through Greensboro. Christian earned his Ph.D. from UNC Greensboro, making this return not just a move, but a continuation of a story that started here.
Now, that experience is being reinvested right here in Greensboro.
At home, the Friends describe themselves as urban homesteaders, enjoying a quieter pace of life filled with family time, good food, and simple routines. You might spot them at Augustino Gusto Bakery, catching a show at Tanger Center, or grabbing a slice at Mario’s.
Still on the list: a Grasshoppers game and their first show at the Pyrle.
Greensboro has always been part of Christian’s story. Now it’s where he’s helping shape what comes next.
Welcome home, Christian.
