Dr. Shree Dorestant

For Dr. Shree Dorestant, returning to Greensboro wasn’t just a career move—it was a homecoming. After years of impactful work in New York City, Shree stepped into a groundbreaking role as Greensboro’s first Chief Sustainability Officer. But beyond the professional milestone, it was the sense of calm and connection that truly drew her back.

Shree’s journey with Greensboro began in 2007 when she moved to the city without knowing a soul. She quickly found her footing, working with the City’s Water Resources Department, earning her doctoral degree, and purchasing her first home. Her path then led her to the New York City Department of Environmental Protection, where she coordinated stormwater management programs across the five boroughs.

In 2022, the opportunity to lead Greensboro’s sustainability efforts beckoned. Now, Shree is at the forefront of initiatives aiming to transition city operations to 100% renewable energy by 2040, expand electric vehicle infrastructure, and implement equitable environmental practices . Her leadership also extends to community projects like the native plants policy, which promotes biodiversity and environmental resilience .

Beyond her professional endeavors, Shree cherishes the simple joys of life in Greensboro. Whether she’s spending time with her children at LeBauer Park or savoring comfort food at Biscuitville, these moments reinforce her decision to return.
